I don't know about you but when I grew up Swiss Family Robinson made a big impression on me. I spent my childhood between Compo Beach on Long Island Sound and an Adirondack camp that my grandfather built on a the beautiful Lake of Silver. There are probably hundreds of Silver Lakes but none are quite like mine.
As kids we played with no electronics, no gadgets and really during the summer months very little television. Our imaginations were the sole source of adventure and the limits? Well there really were no limits. If you were not entertained enough you needed only to look inward and you became very good at this.I have to admit that movies did help tickle that imagination and between your heart's or mind's desire and a Saturday matinee you were off and running re-creating... creating the wildest adventures you could.I have built many a tree house and each one was fashioned somewhat after the one I saw in Swiss Family Robinson and each one was as exhilarating as the last. Even the house I built to live in in Vermont is reminiscent of that special tree house. For anyone who has been in my house, you know that the ability to play within it is as important as its role in providing shelter.
I have a feeling my tree house building is not over yet.
The idea of an extraordinary tree house AND a tropical island left me with a connection to both and I have been drawn to them ever since!
P.S. Check out the website for Maho Bay Camps, St John where I have spent many vacations... and you will see how close I have come to capturing this concept... and please note: Maho Bay evening entertainment includes a showing of the original movie, Swiss Family Robinson on a regular basis and it is always a hit with the guests!I will spend my first two nights at Maho - a home away from home....
I will ...keep you posted!...
